The $1B Podcast Blind Spot

Are Advertisers Missing the Real Value of Podcasts?

Audio agency Oxford Road has found what it calls a $1 billion hole in podcast advertising… and it comes down to measurement. Surveying some of the biggest podcast advertisers in the U.S., including six of the top ten spenders, Oxford Road discovered that 76% of brands would increase their podcast investment if attribution for YouTube podcasts matched what's available on the audio side.

The core technical problem is that advertisers can't reliably connect the dots between someone hearing a podcast ad and then taking action; a purchase, a sign-up, a website visit; making it hard to justify scaling budgets without that proof.

Promo codes and custom URLs help, but they're imperfect signals that miss a huge portion of actual listener behavior.

Here's the thing though: chasing that direct-response attribution may be looking at podcasting through the wrong lens entirely. Having worked on the strategy behind hundreds of podcasts, I'd argue the medium's real superpower lives in the middle of the sales funnel. That slow, steady build of trust and familiarity between a host and their audience. Podcast listeners don't just hear ads, they absorb them through a voice they've invited into their commute, their workout, their kitchen. They appreciate them. They trust them.

That kind of relationship doesn't show up cleanly in a last-click attribution model, but it absolutely moves purchasing decisions over time. The industry would do well to solve the technical measurement gap, but the bigger opportunity is helping advertisers understand and value what podcasting has always done best.

Featured Insight

A new report from Triton Digital, covered by InsideRadio, confirms what many independent podcasters have been hoping to hear: the new listener gold rush is real. Podcast reach surpassed 50% of Americans for the first time in 2025, and the most striking finding is where those new listeners are showing up — in niche categories like Kids & Family, Fiction, Health & Fitness, and Technology, where nearly 4 in 10 listeners are brand new to podcasting. This is a direct signal that specialized, interest-driven shows are driving the medium's growth, not just the mega-shows dominating the charts. Even more compelling for those of you with advertisers or sponsorship goals: new listeners are 69% more likely to visit quick-service restaurants, 49% more likely to shop online, and 22% more likely to switch wireless providers, making them an exceptionally valuable audience. If you've been grinding away at a focused, community-driven show and wondering whether it's worth it, this data is your answer.

Sean Hannity Starts a Podcast

Well file this under “Geez he doesn’t already have one?” Fox News’ Sean Hannity is starting a podcast exclaiming “There isn’t anything I won’t talk about.”

Little late to the game there Sean, but welcome.

Pro Tip or Tool

If you shoot any video on your phone, keep an eye on a new iOS 26.4 Camera toggle called “Audio Zoom.” When it’s enabled, zooming in during a recording prompts the phone to prioritize audio from the subject you’re framing. You’ll find it in the Camera settings, and you can switch it on or off depending on the sound you want.
